Resumo:

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze by clinical and radiographic parameters the use of enamel matrix derivative (EMD) with or without a synthetic bone substitute (Bone Ceramic) in the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects in humans.

Methods: Nine patients and eighteen defects in need of treatment for periodontal intrabony defects were selected and assigned to the treatment with EMD or EMD plus Bone Ceramic assessing clinical and radiographic measurements.

Results: At one year, mean probing depth (PD) reduction demonstrated improvements in all groups when compared to the baseline (P<0.01). At 1 year PD reduction ≥ 2mm was measured in 57% of the defects (i.e., in 4 of the 7) when EMD + BC was used; in 36% of the defects (i.e., 4 of the 11) when EMD was used. There were no statistically significant differences when standardized radiographic subtractions were compared radiographic.

Conclusion: In conclusion, results from the present cases series confirm that a regenerative procedure based on EMD plus Bone Ceramic had better results in defect fill, although there was a variation in the numbers of defects.

Worldwide are held about 16,000 transplants of stem cells autologous and 29,000 allogeneic. In Brazil, the stem cell transplant autologous bone marrow transplantation increases about 1,000 per year. Cell therapy or transplantation of Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSC) is a regenerative medicine that aims to restore and regenerate the functions of senescent cells or tissues with serious injuries. The CTH constitute from 0.05% to 0.1% of human bone marrow and circulating haematopoietic cells. The phenotype of hematopoietic stem cells include CD 34 antigen expression of the (+) and CD133 (+). Samples were collected in 120 ml         (± 5.0 %) blood from bone  marrow, from a universe sample consisted of fifteen patients  and  the  comparison  between  the  manual  method  and  system SEPAX.  For all samples  the quantification of total leukocytes (CD34 (-)) ranged from 3.5 x  103 to 6.5 x103, no evidence of infection. The average measurements of cells extracted by SEPAX were statistically superior to the manual method and the technique SEPAX obtained a lower standard deviation of measurements, showing greater accuracy of the technique. Furthermore, there was no statistically significant correlation (p-value > 0.05) among these techniques, proving that the method can be SEPAX greater control of the results. Added to this, the technique SEPAX, achieved a higher viability of hematopoietic stem cells. Therefore, the system opens SEPAX advantages over manual by several factors, as well as ensuring the sterility of the product also allows extracting higher number of cells CD34 (+), with greater viability.

Scaffolds of chitosan and collagen can offer a biological niche for the growth of adipose derived stem cells (ADSC). The objective of this work was to characterize the physico-chemical properties of the scaffolds and the ADSC, as well as their interactions to direct influences of the scaffolds on the behavior of ADSC. The methodology included an enzymatic treatment of fat obtained by liposuction by collagenase, ASDC immunophenotyping, cell growth kinetics, biocompatibility studies of the scaffolds analyzed by the activity of alkaline phosphatase (AP), nitric oxide (NO) determination by the Griess-Saltzman reaction, and images of both optical and scanning electron microscopy of the matrices. The extent of the crosslinking of genipin and glutaraldehyde was evaluated by ninhydrin assays, solubility tests and degradation of the matrices. The results showed that the matrices are biocompatible, exhibit physical and chemical properties needed to house cells in vivo and are strong stimulators of signaling proteins (AP) and other molecules (NO) which are important in tissue healing. Therefore, the matrices provide a biological niche for ADSC adhesion, proliferation and cells activities.

Resumo:

Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (COLD) is responsible for leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide, and a major public health problem worldwide. In addition, COLD is associated with high costs. In the EU, the total direct costs of respiratory diseases are estimated at 6 % of total health care costs, and that COLD accounts for 56 % of these expenditures (38.6 billion euros). In the United States, the direct costs of COLD are 29.5 billion and indirect costs of the order of 20.4 billion dollars. In Brazil, it is estimated that 5 million Brazilians have COLD, according to the Brazilian Thoracic Society (BTS) and second DATASUS, COLD generated in 2010, the National Public Health System, 141,994 hospitalizations that led the 778,428 days of hospitalization. Cell therapy can be regarded in a broad and general manner to the use of cells for the treatment of COLD, mainly stem cells and telocytes. Although not a significant number of reports, involving lung and object of study in cell therapy in human patients, there is consistent data, both in humans and in animal models that show the migration of stem cells from bone marrow to the lung and the recovery of lung function in different experimental situations. The results, together with those of other research groups, allow to contemplate the possibility of application of cell therapy in patients with COLD.

Resumo:

The hypomineralization is a pathology that has great clinical relevance, where the affected dental enamel presents areas of discoloration, with higher fracture risk, high risk caries and high sensitivity. The aim of work was to perform a survey of possible carriers of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), through the Beighton test, which is attributed to a heterogeneous group of genetic amendments of the structure and collagen synthesis and connective tissue and be able to associate the relationship the incidence of MIH in this group. Because it is known that collagen is of paramount importance to dental development, and if occurs the interference by addition of destructive agents in their midst this will inhibit tooth morphogenesis. As the diagnostic of this syndrome in childhood is very difficult because children are more flexible, associate the detection of the presence of MIH may alert the investigation of Ehrles-Danlos syndrome, demonstrating the severity of structural anomalies, in this manner the early treatment can improve the quality of life of this population group.

Background:  In Brazil, between 2009 and 2016, the number of diagnostic imaging grew on average  51.35%.  Radiographs are complementary tests of extreme importance to close dental diagnosis and map out a plan of treatment.

Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the degradation and durability of processing liquid solutions of x-rays films, the Kodak brand in open containers (unprotected solutions) and sealed in opaque plastic containers and lids (proprietary solutions) within the darkroom.

Methods: For this work we used 20 Ektaspeed periapical films manufactured by Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, USA, classified as a group and as sensitivity, maturing for 18 months after the experimental phase, processing solutions (developer and fixer) Kodak conventional. The main variables predicting response to this work were the sensitometric properties of processing solutions such as Contrast, Optical Density and Latitude. The main continuous and categorical predictor variables were air oxidation.

Results: The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and analysis of regression and Durbin-Watson in relation to predicting response and continuous and categorical predictors, following confidence level of 95%. It was observed that the container was in the liquid solution in a closed container (protected solution) showed less degradation and durability, while the open container was 70% higher degradation of the container to the protected solution. Also, after regression analysis between the response predictor protected degradation and continuous predictor Contrast (P) Optical Density (P) and latitude (P) was obtained in all cases p = 0.01 <0.05 and residue analysis Durbin-Watson of 2.16. The same analysis was performed for the degradation predictor response deprotected and continuous predictor Contrast (D) Optical Density (D) and latitude (D), yielding in all cases P = 0.03 <0.05 and analysis of waste Durbin Watson 2.5.

Conclusion: Already be concluded that both chambers were maintained at the same temperature with the same local light and moisture, at the same time with the same number of films disclosure, this degradation occurred by the action of oxygen.

This epidemiological cross-sectional study of the oral health status of the child population of both genders enrolled in Municipal Schools Early Childhood Education; José Aidar, Neil Calil, September 7, located in New Granada in the State of São Paulo. It was intended to assess the oral health, measuring the condition of the affected or not dental caries structures arising directly or indirectly from the condition of hygiene, diet, quantity and quality of health care and services provided to the population. This study followed the methodology recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to conduct epidemiological studies, using the DMFT index. The form used is a simplified form to the LEC (Epidemiological Survey of Caries). One may observe that the children of this community are at risk of tooth decay due to the frequency of cariogenic food, a lack of education about oral hygiene and poor access to care provided by the health service in the region. According to the results as a basis to guide planning and demand preventive and curative oral health services, should be encouraged to care and health care of this population.

Background: The prognostic of replanted teeth is related with integrality of cement periodontal ligament and of cement layer. This cement layer is influenced by many factors, principally the extraalveolar period and storage local. However, there’re doubts if systemic alterations like diabetes can interfere on healing process of tooth replantation too.

Objective: The aim of this study was evaluate the healing process of immediate replantation of incisors of non-controlled diabetic rats.

Study Design: It were used 32 rats, divided in two groups with 16 animals each group. Group I received citrate buffer intravenously. In animals of Group II was inoculated streptozotocin dissolved in citrate buffer intravenously with intention to induce diabetes. After blood glucose control the teeth were extracted and replanted immediately in their respective alveolus. Systemic antibiotic therapy started in immediate post operatory period. After 10 at 60 days of replantation, it was executed the euthanasia of animals and parts of body were submitted at laboratorial processing to obtain the cuts. These cuts were dyed with hematoxylin-eosin and trichromium of Masson for histological and histometric analysis.

Results: Quantitative results at 60th day demonstrated that similar indexes of external root resorption and ankylosis were found in both groups.

Conclusion: It was possible to conclude that alveolar healing process of tooth immediate replantation in diabetic rats occurred satisfactorily although connective tissue in periodontal ligament showed itself less organized in diabetic group when compared with animal of control group during all the studied periods.

Maxillofacial fractures represent a major public health problem. Among these, those of the maxillary zygomatic complex are among the most incidents, representing the second or third position. Young adult males are affected more frequently. The most prevalent etiotogies are motorcycle accidents, car, assaults, sports and falls. These vary according to the demographic region studied and the age of patients. Due to this high variation in prevalence of fractures of CZM, this study aimed to evaluate during the period 2002-2011 characteristics of zygomatic fractures in patients treated by postgraduate and Maxillofacial Surgery Faculty of Dentistry Araçatuba-UNESP. During the study period of zygoma fractures accounted 25.44 % of facial fractures was analyzed in 2512 records. Among 639 zygomatic fractures, men are the most hit, 71.8 %, and the age group 21-30 years is the most affected. The most frequent cause was motorcycle accident. The predominant treatment was surgery. Our study showed that a variation in the literature on the etiology of these fractures according to the study area occurs.

Background: After a century of development and evolution of orthodontics as a science, through global dissemination of Facial Orthopedics procedures we come on the eve of the 3rd Millennium without a unanimous consensus on this issue. Using simple preventive and interceptive orthodontic procedures such as those aimed at maintaining space or its recovery, control of oral habits, and treatment of cross bite and open bite, can prevent or lessen the severity malocclusion. Thus, the early diagnosis of conditions affecting the normal development of dental occlusion can contribute to significantly reduce the incidence of malocclusions.

Objective: This study aimed to make a literature review on preventive and interceptive orthodontics, showing the advantages of this specialty as well as presenting the gaps in information that motivate the improvement and advancement of this prophylaxis.

Methodology: We performed a detailed search of scientific articles with themes common across a database, including the Medline, Pubmed, scielo and bireme with publication of criteria in 1999 will 2015.

Conclusion: It was concluded through the literature findings that preventive and interceptative orthodontic services facilitates the population's access to treatment, allowing the elimination of some etiologic factors and preventing the progression of dental, skeletal and functional inharmonies, mitigating or even eliminating the need for more complex treatments thereafter.

Background: The endodontic treatment enables cleaning and shaping the root canal to then obtain a three-dimensional shutter, thus preventing reinfection by microorganisms. Thus, irrigation-aspiration complement the mechanical instrumentation facilitating the removal of microorganisms, debris and necrotic debris, especially the areas where instruments do not reach for the preparation of root canals, as isthmus, accessory canals and flattening.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate, through a literature review, the importance of passive ultrasonic irrigation in the sanitization of root canals, thus increasing the chances of success of endodontic treatment. Literature

Review: Based on the literature, the use of passive ultrasonic irrigation complements the mechanical instrumentation facilitating the removal of microorganisms, debris and necrotic debris, especially the areas where instruments do not reach for the preparation of root canals, as isthmus, accessory canals and flattening.

Discussion: The Ca (OH) 2 is used as an intracanal medication, in order to supply the instrumentation which, together with the use of auxiliary chemicals and agents of the root canal irrigants, failed to meet during the chemical-mechanical preparation. However, after his drug action, Ca (OH) 2 should be completely removed from the root canal, since there is a correlation between the presence of Ca (OH) 2 remaining and marginal leakage, resulting in the failure of endodontic treatment.

Conclusion: It was concluded that the passive ultrasonic irrigation is more effective than the conventional ultrasonic irrigation and irrigation in the removal of debris and smear layer from root canals.

Resumo:

Education With the advent of composite resin, amalgam is no longer indicated as first treatment option. And so began a successive change in dentistry restorations which disregards the research as the longevity of a restoration. The controversy over mercury contamination emphasized this practice. Thus, this literature review study aims to guide the professional and the public about the risks of using and removal of amalgam. This material today should not be an indication of posterior restorations, but also the exchange of this for aesthetic principles and mercury contamination through the restorations does not justify this exchange. For this mercury contamination occurs mainly during manipulation and removal of the amalgam, making it necessary to observe the actual indication for such replacement, not exposing the patient / professional / risk to the environment only by the "aesthetic" factor.
